If its not accomplishing what you want for your site then it will definitely hamper what you vision as success for yourself. I mean, you wouldn't use a screwdriver to drive a nail right? I can be done but the amount of effort and time it will take is not worth it. In addition, some platforms (Blogger for instance) add their branding to your site so this may not come across as professional to your readers, if that's what you want. To an extend, it does matter. Sometimes I finetune it a bit, but most of the time it works just great with the plugins and themes available. I love wordpress.
