Block Comment Spam On Your WordPress Blog – WP-SpamFree Plugin

I just hate sneezing. Hey everyone, how’s your Friday? Mine has been fun and sneezy, hehe :D . Okay, only one sneeze today. Am I sick for that? How many sneezes should one get normally in a day? Okay, we are not doing health education and medicine here. Let’s get on. But seriously I hate sneezing. Oh, I said we should get on, right? Yeah, seems I’m getting old, gee…when I’m 80, it’ll be unimaginable..my grandchildren, beware! :D :P

So there’s a wordpress plugin that I use for blocking spam in my comments and I want to share it with you guys. This wordpress plugin is called WP-SpamFree as it says in the heading of this post. I don’t use Akismet and I’ve said this in some of my comments. And I was even talking about this in the comments in one of the other posts with Dennis, and it all got long, and Dennis, even thought that my reason for not using it was not making sense, but finally, it did, when I explained it further to him, Halleluyah to that :D .

Okay, so what was my reason for not using Akismet? Well, my reason is that I don’t want to go sign up for another account on the web that I wouldn’t using. Because to be able to use Akismet on your WordPress (self-hosted) blog, you need to get the API key for Akismet and to be able to get that, you need to sign up for an account with WordPress.com. And if I do, I’m not going to use WordPress.com again, so I thougth it would be a waste so I knew that WordPress (self-hosted) has a whole lot of plugins for almost anything needs to be done on it, so I searched and then I found the WP-SpamFree wordpress plugin for comment spam and I decided to use that.

So far the WP-SpamFree plugin has blocked 302 spam comments and only about 2 has been able to come true. So I think that’s really good. Sometime ago, spam comments used to flood or should I say, tsunami in. Yeah, tsunami in is better. So sometime ago, spam comments used to tsunami in and all the spam comments that tsunamied in could drown the Titanic, seriously. Man, it was just too much and I would be talking behind my laptop like a woman who’s husband just left for her a teenager in high school or something.

But after I got myself WP-SpamFree my mouth has been stroked up, meaning my mouth has got stroke now, yeah cos I don’t talk behind my laptop now. If you were standing elsewhere you would think I’m a psych ward patient who just got a chance to sit behind the doctor’s laptop (the friendly doctor, yeah, if he weren’t friendly, he wouldn’t let me sit there, would he? because he doesn’t want me unassembling his laptop :D ).

So do you have any other plugin that you use for spam on your WordPress blog? I know most of you use Akismet. And how many of you use the WP-SpamFree plugin? Anybody in the club yet? Please share your answers to these questions and any other thought you might have about this post in the comment field below :) . Thanks :) .

And before I forget, okay, I forgot, you can download the WP-SpamFree plugin here. ;)

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

    Great post.

I recently switched over to WP-SpamFree plugin. It works greats but it blocks all the good pingbacks and trackbacks and considers them spam. I have tried to contact support several times and haven’t heard back from them. So far I have had about ten good pingbacks and trackbacks blocked. So I am trying to decide to remove it or deal with it.

Gee..now that’s something to deal with. I didn’t know about that. Now, I guess I’m in the same boat with you. It’s either to find a new one or stick with WP-SpamFree and figure out or find a way to let in the pingbacks and trackbacks because I realized some of my pingbacks weren’t showing but I didn’t know why. Now I know. Thanks for shedding light on this, James. I really appreciate it :) .

Thanks for passing by always, James. Hope to see you here again soon :) .

  2. I actually use both Akismet and WP-SpamFree (Aksimet left too many spam comments in my SPAM bucket that I had to filter through) WP-SPAM Free is better and weeding out so you don’t have to filter spam, and Akismet catches the ones WP-SPAM Free misses. I also noted that Pingbacks are being caught and dropped more.

Now, that’s the problem we have to deal with now with WP-SpamFree.

  3. Hi Shirley, I’ve been using Akismet. Sometimes it works very well, other times it doesn’t. The stats say 19,748 spams caught with an accuracy rate of 98.383%. I think that accuracy rate is way off unless sending comments to the ‘pending’ status is considered caught. Yesterday I had more spam comments than ever before. I had 243 comments that were spam and Akismet did actually catch them. Almost all of them were from the same IP address which I blocked.

Did you happen to catch my last comment in that thread? Yes I did understand you’re reason, but no, not really a good reason. ;) hehe

One minute to sign up and get your key, and you never hear from them again…and none of these silly issues I’m hearing with these spam free plugins. :)
